Great Start! Ayekoo

The inaugural meeting of F.L.A.G. was a great success anyway you look at it, from the opening introductions and welcome address, to the socializing and mingling session at the end, there was only one word to describe it: BEAUTIFUL! a big AYEKOO to all who were present and those who for various reasons couldn't make it. A lot was accomplished and the proverbial ice was broken, the recurring theme throughout the night was to bring all the 'little clicks' within our community together to form a 'big click'.

It has to be mentioned that all contributions, ideas, comments, and participation was greatly appreciated. This is what it's all about, a community forum to share and appreciate our unique culture and traditions in a broad context of a support group within our adopted new home. The community 'council of elders' namely: Dr. Kwaku Addo, Dr. Seth Gakpo, Dr. Agyenim Boateng, Mr. Alfred Nsiah (Kwame Poku), Mr. Sam Owusu (Bro K), and Mr. Sam Darko Mensah were instrumental in directing the deliberations, and we owe them a great deal of gratitude.

The next step is perhaps the most crucial in the organizational structure of the association. A planning commitee was tasked to draft a proposal for the approval of the council of elders to address the election of officers, drawing of a constitution, meeting scheduling, and other operational guidelines. The commitee will meet in a couple of weeks to prepare their report and recommendations, we are very grateful for the members who graciously volunteered to be part of this planning commitee, it will take some sacrifice and dedication to keep this association going.

Dear Association Members,

It was very inspiring to see all of us come together for the greater good of our community. We have the potential to achieve every goal we have set for ourselves. I know this Association will be instrumental in improving our lives and the lives of others, while strengthening the bond we already have.

Although I cannot serve as a Board member, I would like to help in anyway possible by offering ideas. If these ideas appeal to our Association members, I would be willing to head specific committees organized to implement these ideas. Although we are just beginning as an organization, there are many possibilities we can explore for fundraising. Some of the more simple fundraising projects we can begin with would include having a car wash, doing raffles, and having a yard sale. Performing these fundraising events would be totally free to the Association - it would only cost us our time. McDonald's allows organizations such as ours to have car washes on their property for free. We can also solicit donations from local merchants (restaurant gift certificates, movie passes, electronics, etc) to raffle off, as long as the proceeds will be used for a worthy cause. I think we should look into setting up a scholarship fund for young college Ghanaians. This would certainly be a worthy cause.

As we grow, we could also look into developing and selling a Ghanaian cook book, participating in U.K. and K.S.U. homecoming activities as a group, and perhaps hosting a bake sale.

I would appreciate if these ideas could be presented during the next Executive Board meeting, which will be held in the next two weeks. After presentation to the Board, it could promptly be presented to the entire Association at our next general meeting.

I genuinely look forward to working with everyone.

Sincerely,

Nick Crabbe
