Christmas Party

Folks, its that time of the year again. The second annual FLAG Christmas Party will be on Saturday December 27th, 2008 at 1101 Red Mile road in Lexington. Tickets for this special occasion are on sale at Nana's African Carrebean Market for $15, tickets can also be purchased from any of FLAG's executive members.

The party will start at 8pm.

Join us for an evening of celebration and socializing.

There will be plenty of food. We encourage the men to bring drinks.

Summer Picnic

We will have a summer picnic on Saturday July 5th at Jacobson Park from 3pm to 8:30. There will be a variety of games to include but not limited to Oware, Dame, Ludu, and there's talk of playing "Chaskeley" we might even have a little soccer game of "gutter to gutter" if we can find gutters at the park. Come lets have some fun this July 4th weekend.

We will set up grills so please bring some meat, food, and drinks; we also encourage you to bring blankets and/or lounge chairs. By the way, the ladies can show off their childhood "ampe" skills. For further info, please call 859-533-3513

Cookout/ General Meeting

There will be a cookout and general meeting on Saturday, June 21st at 1149 Tanbark road, Lexington. Come and socialize. We will plan other activities for the summer and the rest of the year.

Greetings All FLAG Members!

As we gear ourselves up for the upcoming Christmas holidays and the New Year, I'd like to request that members reflect on the spirit of the season and what FLAG can do to provide service to the community that we live in.

At our last general meeting, the President among other issues, emphasized on the need for FLAG to promote community engagement as one of our primary goals for the year 2008. I'd therefore, like to appeal to all of you to embrace this challenge and to come up with ideas to make this a reality. Let's have a serious discussion on this issue at our next general meeting on Saturday, December 08, 2007. Thanks!

George and Abena took the art of hosting to whole different level. The setting was especially great, and the food... oh my....!!!

We Need Your Input

As discussed at the last general meeting in Frankfort, we are asking for your suggestions for a slogan, logo and ideas for the association. We also need all hands on deck as we plan for the christmas banquet. Please forward all suggestions to the secretary at Dinahdavies@hotmail.com or to Flaginky@gmail.com.

We are also looking for a graphic designer to help with our logo. The date and place for our November general meeting will be announced soon. Members of the christmas banquet planning committee are requested to contact Mr. Ed Sarfo (859-338-8806), keep up the good work.

Our First Meeting in the Capital City

Frankfort here we come!! This Saturday, FLAG will hold our monthly general meeting in Frankfort. The meeting will start at 6:30pm, lets make a special effort to be on time, I will also take this opportunity to thank our Vice President Mr. Kwame Bonsu (Apio) and family for graciously volunteering to host the event; I appeal to all members to bring drinks and/or food (if possible) to support the hosts' efforts.

Members and visitors are encouraged to car-pool if possible. Please contact me at (859)533-3513 for car pooling arrangements, I urge all members to invite as many people as possible to this meeting, our goal is to involve all Ghanaians in this community. It is being speculated that this meeting will draw the largest crowd yet; we have received messages of encouragement from as far away as Virginia, and countless enquiries about membership from folks all over Kentucky.

Items to be discussed at the meeting will include plans for a christmas banquet/ inauguration, FLAG T-shirts, formation of sub-committees.

FLAG Flying High

The passionate debates and deliberations, the good food (I'm talking about kelewele, banku and okro soup,fried rice, khebab etc.) all contributed to a very special night at the general meeting on Saturday, September 8. The energy and enthusiasm shown by all in attendance was just fantastic. The massive turnout was particularly impressive considering that we were competing against the UK-Kent State football game and the Roots and Heritage festival downtown for the same time slot.

Our hosts, the Darko-Mensahs were simply superb. Brenda and Sam were classy (and brave) enough to open their beautiful home to about sixty people, they went out of their way to make everyone feel comfortable and we are very grateful for their hospitality. We missed those who couldn't make it due to family, work and other obligations.

The order of business for the occassion included ratifying the association's constitution and bylaws, election and swearing-in of executive officers, and official membership sign ups.

The general assembly also voted for a monthly membership dues of $10. The elected executive officers are: Fredua Dankwa Jr. (K.K.)- President, Kwame Bonsu (Apio)- Vice President, Frank Boateng- Treasurer, Dinah Davies- Secretary, Kwadwo Darko-Mensah (Onasis)- Public Relations Officer (Lexington), Enoch Boakye Nsiah- Public Relations Officer (Frankfort)

General Meeting

The general meeting of F.L.A.G. is scheduled for Saturday, September 8th, at 524 Mill Pond Road, Lexington. The event is being graciously hosted by Sam and Brenda Darko-Mensah. Please click the link in the announcement section for directions.

Official association business will commence at 6pm, all are adviced to be there on time in order to have maximum participation. This all-important meeting will have issues such as nomination and election of officers and ratification of bylaws on the agenda.

Great Planning Session

The planning commitee's meeting was a big success by all accounts. The Council of Elders guided the meeting in the right direction and most of the issues were hashed out (or so we think). Special thanks to the Addo family for graciously hosting the event.
A full report of the meeting will be presented at the next general meeting on September 8th, it is also expected that the general membership will ratify the proposed bylaws and other recommendations drafted by the planning commitee.

Some of the items on the agenda for our next meeting are:

1. Nomination and election of officers
2. Ratification of bylaws
3. Membership agreement/sign-up
4. Membership dues

Great Start! Ayekoo

The inaugural meeting of F.L.A.G. was a great success anyway you look at it, from the opening introductions and welcome address, to the socializing and mingling session at the end, there was only one word to describe it: BEAUTIFUL! a big AYEKOO to all who were present and those who for various reasons couldn't make it. A lot was accomplished and the proverbial ice was broken, the recurring theme throughout the night was to bring all the 'little clicks' within our community together to form a 'big click'.

It has to be mentioned that all contributions, ideas, comments, and participation was greatly appreciated. This is what it's all about, a community forum to share and appreciate our unique culture and traditions in a broad context of a support group within our adopted new home. The community 'council of elders' namely: Dr. Kwaku Addo, Dr. Seth Gakpo, Dr. Agyenim Boateng, Mr. Alfred Nsiah (Kwame Poku), Mr. Sam Owusu (Bro K), and Mr. Sam Darko Mensah were instrumental in directing the deliberations, and we owe them a great deal of gratitude.

The next step is perhaps the most crucial in the organizational structure of the association. A planning commitee was tasked to draft a proposal for the approval of the council of elders to address the election of officers, drawing of a constitution, meeting scheduling, and other operational guidelines. The commitee will meet in a couple of weeks to prepare their report and recommendations, we are very grateful for the members who graciously volunteered to be part of this planning commitee, it will take some sacrifice and dedication to keep this association going.

The Final Count Down

The much anticipated initial meeting is just a few days away, please prepare to participate, contribute, and share ideas as to how we will start off on the right note. It is very important that we all brainstorm to establish our goals, objectives, and system of operation.

In the spirit and tradition of our Ghanaian culture, the men can bring a drink or two to share (if they want) and the women can also bring some 'chops' (of course, if they want to). Let us all come together as one family and make this meeting the beginning of the best Ghanaian community association ever.

It will be a great time to relax, socialize, and organize. See y'all (the Kentucky influence oh!)

In the wake of the passing of Mr. Baffour Agyemang-Badu (Kankam), the Ghanaian community in metro Lexington and Frankfort, Kentucky came together to renew our commitment to form a social community association. This call to schedule regular meetings, social activities, and planned resourceful and educational programs is in response to our need to appreciate a greater sense of unity and community to make us more organized as well as promote comradery.

The energy and unity shown by the Ghanaian community in the Lexington and Frankfort area; coupled with the support of the late Kankam's family and friends from all over the country was really impressive. To this end, a large section of the Ghanaians in this area have expressed their willingness to be part of an organized association. At the close of the funeral, a cross section of us decided to arrange an initial meeting at the Dankwas' residence on Saturday August 11, 2007 at 5pm. If you are reading this page before the schuduled meeting, please inform as many Ghanaians as possible to make this initial meeting a success.

We look forward to building a strong and united community.
